Damascus, SANA-Syria welcomed the first Human Rights Council resolution since the fall of the Assad regime, which welcomed its fall and the formation of the new government. It also addressed the need to lift economic sanctions and Israeli violations.
Syria affirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting human rights and its readiness to continue positive cooperation to serve the interests of the Syrian people and preserve Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement , published on its Telegram channel: “We welcome the UN Human Rights Council resolution entitled ‘The Situation of Human Rights in the Syrian Arab Republic,’ which is the first UN resolution since the fall of the former regime.”
The Ministry added: “This resolution reflects a new approach and a new chapter in Syria’s history, as it welcomed the fall of the Assad regime and the formation of a new, diverse government in Syria.” It also addresses issues related to the need to lift economic sanctions and Israeli violations on Syrian territory, both of which pose a threat to the stability of the situation in Syria and undermine efforts to de-escalate and achieve a sustainable political transition.
The Syrian Arab Republic demands an immediate cessation of these violations. The resolution also welcomes our national and international efforts to promote and protect human rights despite ongoing challenges and difficulties.
The Ministry added that Syria views this resolution positively and considers it a balanced step that reflects the positive efforts undertaken by the Syrian government for the first time, despite the heavy legacy of the former regime. The resolution also takes into account the complexities facing the country in light of the evolving situation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the resolution came after extensive consultations during the current session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. It also stated that, within the framework of the new approach to Syria at the international level, the Ministry engaged constructively and effectively, both during multilateral meetings with the participation of UN member states and bilaterally with the main sponsors of the draft resolution, namely the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Qatar, and Turkey.
The Ministry stated that Syria appreciates the constructive approach and positive cooperation demonstrated by Member States and the Core Group during the process of drafting and adopting the resolution, and commends the role of the United Kingdom as the co-sponsor.
The Ministry expressed its deep appreciation for the efforts of Member States, civil society organizations, and victims’ and survivors’ associations, who have worked tirelessly over the years to preserve the rights of Syrian men and women on the international community’s agenda at the Human Rights Council.
The Ministry stated: “Syria affirms its unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Syrian people, in accordance with its relevant international obligations. It stands ready to continue positive and constructive dialogue and cooperation to serve the interests of the Syrian people, preserve Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and enhance its security, stability, and prosperity.”.
