New York, SANA-United Nations welcomed the steps taken by Syria to cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), describing these steps as “encouraging.”
“The new Syrian administration has taken steps to engage with the OPCW, work towards full compliance with international law, and begin a new chapter of cooperation to resolve outstanding issues,” Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General of Disarmament Affairs, said in a briefing to the UN Security Council last night on the resolution about Syria’s chemical weapons program.
The UN official considered that the new political situation in Syria represents an opportunity to obtain long-awaited clarifications regarding the chemical weapons program in Syria, praising in this context the Syrian government’s commitment to full cooperation and transparency with the OPCW.
