Damascus, SANA-The Journalists’ Union stressed the importance of providing a free and independent space for the press in Syria, as freedom of opinion and expression is not just a human right, but an absolute necessity for building a prosperous, democratic society capable of overcoming challenges.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, which coincides on May 3 of each year, the Union, in a statement, highlighted the sacrifices made by Syrian journalists for a free homeland and a free press.
It noted journalist’s endurance of enormous burdens and risks, and their loss of their lives in the pursuit of conveying the truth and enlightening public opinion.
The Union added that those sacrifices will not be in vain and will remain a beacon illuminating the path of journalists toward a freer and just future.
The Union emphasized the need to reject all forms of hatred speech and sectarian and regional incitement, which Syrian society has suffered from.
It stressed that the responsibility of the press and media requires promoting national unity, tolerance, and constructive dialogue, and spreading the values of peace and love that unite Syrians of all spectrums.
The Union concluded its statement by saying, “We, the Syrian Journalists, believe that a free and responsible press is the true guarantee for Syria’s future. We will continue to work with determination and resolve to achieve this noble goal and provide a safe and enabling environment for journalists and media professionals.”
