Damascus, SANA-Sweida governor Dr. Mustafa al-Bakour confirmed that the recent security agreement in the province was initiated by the people of Sweida, its notables, and religious leaders.
He stressed that talk of external support for this agreement contradicts the statement made by the province’s notables, which emphasized national affiliation with Syria.
“Several of youths Sweida have joined the General Security to contribute to organizing internal security and activating the role of institutions.” In a special interview with Syria Today TV, al-Bakour said.
Al-Bakour affirmed the need to restrict the possession of weapons to the State, and that anyone carrying light weapons must either obtain a legal license or work within the framework of the Ministry of Defense or the General Security.
He indicated that President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Minister of Interior Anas Khattab are closely monitoring developments in the security situation in Sweida, expressing his confidence that the province is moving toward a new phase of stability through joint civil and governmental cooperation.
Al-Bakour added that the statement issued later was agreed upon by all attendees, including Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri.
Notables and authorities in Sweida province issued a statement on Friday evening affirming their commitment to national principles and the unified Syrian identity.
They emphasized the importance of activating the role of the Ministry of Interior and the judicial police in the province, and that this must be carried out by the people of Sweida themselves.
