Communication Ministry announces starting the first phase of Ugarit project “2”

Damascus, SANA- In cooperation with American telecommunications company (UNIFI), Syrian Telecommunications Establishment, and Cyprus Telecom Authority (CYTA), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced Wednesday launch of the 1st phase of Ugarit project “2”, licensed by Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of US Treasury Department.

Communication Ministry said in statement to SANA that the project aims at developing Syria’s international digital connection via Cyprus, and this strategic initiative represents an important step in strengthening Syria’s communications infrastructure.

The ministry added that the 1st phase of the project focuses on updating the equipment provided in Syria, as this phase lays the foundation for expanding global internet connectivity in the country.

The Ugarit project will significantly increase internet capacity in Syria, and with implementation of subsequent phases of the project, Syria will benefit from further improvements in internet speed and wider network coverage, thus supporting economic activity and technological progress.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Mr. Abdulsalam Haykal, stressed that the launch of Ugarit project represents the beginning of a new stage in Syria’s digital future.

Haykal went on saying: “We are committed to creating a modern, flexible, and competitive communications infrastructure that meets requirements of rapidly evolving global economy and this is only the first step as we are determined to continue moving forward.”

In turn, UNIFI Telecom CEO said that Alasia Subsea Cable project licensed by Office of Foreign Assets Control, is a strategic and forward-looking initiative aimed at restoring vital international connectivity in Syria. ‏

For his part, Andreas Neocleous, CEO of CYIA, asserted the authority commitment to supporting regional initiatives that enhance communication, through close cooperation with Syrian Telecom Establishment and CYTA.

It is noteworthy that after completing the first phase, the project will start the second phase, and thus enhancing Syria’s access to global networks.
