Lavrov: The West politicizes humanitarian file in Ukraine

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that the west tried to politicize the humanitarian file in Ukraine and give it an anti-Russian character.

During his meeting with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer in Moscow on Thursday, Lavrov pointed out that the humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine continued to deteriorate over the past eight years due to crimes of Kyiv authorities, despite of the signing of Minsk Agreement which provided for halting the fighting works in Donbas.

Lavrov added that the west had ignored what the Nazis have done when they destroyed the residential neighborhoods, houses, hospitals and schools in Donbas and claimed the lives of thousands of civilians.

The Western countries are trying to politicize the humanitarian file in Ukraine and give an anti-Russian character on it, the Russian Diplomat went on to say, asserting that was clear in their rejection to the Russian draft resolution at the UN Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Lavrov reiterated that Moscow cares for solving the humanitarian issues in Ukraine, particularly evacuating the civilians and providing humanitarian aid.

He expressed hope that the visit of the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, would help in achieving progress in this regard.

In turn, Maurer hailed Russia’s support to the International Committee of the Red Cross, throughout the years of the war in Donbas mainly in regard with the humanitarian efforts exerted to protect the civilians.

The ICRC president suggested to focus on three points that include facilitating the access of humanitarian aid, enhancing the logistic infrastructures affiliated to the Red Cross in Russia to increase the efficiency of the Committee in Donbas and the Ukrainian territories that are under the control of the Russian forces.
