Syria welcomes Swiss authorities’ easing of sanctions

Damascus, SANA-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the decision of the Swiss Federal Council to lift some sanctions imposed on the energy and transport sectors in Syria, in addition to allowing limited financial services and banking relations.

The Ministry stressed that such a measure represents a step in the right direction to alleviate unfair economic pressures that harm the Syrian people.

It also welcomed the decision of the Swiss Federal Council to impose an additional freeze on the assets of Bashar Al-Assad, as these assets belong to individuals responsible for war crimes and the suffering of the Syrian people.

The Ministry appreciated Switzerland’s commitment to preventing these funds from leaving its jurisdiction before they are subject to judicial scrutiny to determine their source, expressing Syria’s aspiration for further discussions with the Swiss authorities to ensure the return of any assets obtained illegally in a manner that benefits the Syrian people.

It renewed Syria’s call on Switzerland and the international community to continue taking effective steps that contribute to achieving justice, recovery and long-term stability in the country.
